The Italian motor car company Fiat, has owned 58.5% of Chrysler since they filed chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2009. FIAT has now purchased the remaining 41.5% of Chrysler which was held by the United Auto Works trust fund of $3.65 billion plus some annual fees totaling up to $700 million. This all means that the Detroit, Michigan based automotive company is now in full ownership of a European car manufacturer. In a statement, Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said, "The unified
ownership structure will now allow us to fully execute our vision of
creating a global automaker that is truly unique in terms of mix of
experience, perspective and know-how, a solid and open organization that
will ensure all employees a challenging and rewarding environment."

Fiat hasn't been doing well with their sales in Europe recently and thanks to their foot in Chrysler they have been able to remain a company. Fiat is a legendary company for their engines and performance. They have built engines for Ferrari and have some of their own great cars like the Fiat 500 and Fiat 500C Abarth. But how will Fiat influence Dodge which the Rams are now separate and away from Fiat, or Jeep the American original war truck and well know off-road vehicle of choice. Well it has become a noticeable change already. Some of the new Jeeps have a European look about them. For example the new Jeep Cherokee.

It doesn't have its traditional Jeep aesthetics. It is not the type of "truck" one could easily get muddy and go rock crawling, with out lifting, bigger tires, wench, and steel bumpers added to its body. This does however have all the technology needed for such adventures. The only problem with it straight off the line is that it looks to nice. Kind of like how someone would not go hiking in a polo shirt and dress sandals. No, one would need something rugged enough to get dirty and remain durable. But this does not mean without class, absolutely not. What I'm thinking of is the history of Jeep is what makes them look legendary and memorable. Continue with the original design please because originality is better than plastic, bulky, and flashy aesthetics. It's as if the Cherokee went under plastic surgery for a new look and turned out the be something completely different. Like it should have been given a new name because it is no longer a Cherokee.
Now I am not denying the fact that it is a good looking vehicle. The thing is it should not have the Cherokee name put on it, rather something else would fit much better because by carrying the name over it has something it should live up to. Just like children look like their parents. The identity is similar and is passed on. Fiat does this so well with their new 500c which is the best depiction of the original from 1957. With today's safety standards the new 500c looks extremely similar to the 500 from 57. Fiat payed tribute to their originality from their beginnings by keeping the style of the original and applying that appearance to the new model. If Fiat continues that mind set with Jeep, Dodge and ultimately Chrysler, Fiat will continue to be great.
